Yes, Bears’ New Head Coach, Ben Johnson can Command a Room
And it’s a refreshing change.
On Monday, the Bears hired former Detroit Lions OC, Ben Johnson as their new head coach, and rejoicing was heard throughout the land. In this NFL hiring cycle, Ben Johnson was the belle of the ball. And the geek, aka the Bears, got the girl. To Bears’ fans, it was a refreshing change.
Chicago sports talk was rife with discussion of how the next Bears’ head coach needed a couple of qualities. First, the new coach needed to be able to insure the growth and development of Caleb Williams. Football people in general are almost universally confident that Johnson checks that box.
Another question was, “Is Johnson a leader of men and can he command a room?” While obviously that can’t be determined by one press conference, the initial returns are encouraging. Johnson definitely commanded the press conference. He was confident and articulate. This isn’t intended to knock former Bears’ head coach, Matt Eberflus, but Matt was sorely lacking in communication skills and leadership ability.
It was obvious has the season wore down that the inmates were running the asylum at Halas Hall. Hopefully that situation will change in 2025.
