Why So Much Writing is Tripe

While things have gotten slightly better for me at Medium, I still find myself looking for other gigs. Particularly in sports writing. Recently I found a paying site. It doesn’t pay much, but at least it’s something. And the editor is great to work with, so there is that. But I’m still looking for more.

What I’ve noticed about sports pieces on the internet

Many of the sports pieces I read make no sense at all, especially if you are familiar with the subjects being written about.

For example, I read about Ian Happ being traded from the Cubs to the Braves. The problem with that is that Happ has a no-trade clause in his contract.

It seems that superficial research would have uncovered that, but reading job boards helped me understand what is going on.

Helper Wanted: Great Writers Who Will Work for Next to Nothing

I saw one sports site that wanted writers to produce six pieces a day, seven days a week. The pay? Under $700 a week. Those pieces were supposed to be well researched. Right.

When it comes to writing, it seems to be a sellers’ market.
