What We’ve Learned Halfway Through the 2021 NFL Season

The Lions are still, really, really bad.

The Rascals came up with a song that expressed the longing for a stable relationship in a world of change. The closing lyrics were:

How can I be sure
In a world that’s constantly changing?
How can I be sure?
I’ll be sure with you.

But for now, forget romance, let’s talk football. In an NFL world that is constantly changing, the one thing you can count on is the Lions losing. Jerry King and I did the above cartoon after their infamous 2008 season. Last Sunday the Lions came face to face with victory and promptly soiled themselves.

I feel genuinely bad for Lions fans. They are an incredibly hearty breed. And I found myself rooting hard for a Lions win over the Steelers. But, as I watched the Lions fritter way opportunity after opportunity last Sunday, I found my desire to see them win get replaced by my disgust for their ineptitude. Maybe next week, year, or decade.

So, how are the rookie quarterbacks doing?

Honestly, not quite as good as I expected, with the exception of Mac Jones. Of course, Jones has the benefit of playing for one of the best coaches in NFL history. The Patriots…
