Views of Homeschooling Have Changed

When we did it, it wasn’t easy.

My wife and I (primarily my wife) homeschooled our youngest son all the way through high school. He went on to nursing school without a hitch and was an exceptionally good student. As for our oldest son, we homeschooled him until he got into junior high, and then he went to public school in Tecumseh, Oklahoma. There is an asterisk regarding our oldest son. He went to public school in Mt. Pleasant TX. for about a week. And there’s quite a story behind it.

Our oldest son is autistic. High functioning, but autistic. Because of that, we thought he would have a hard time in public school. Keep in in mind this was about 1985 and a diagnosis of autism was really unusual.

When it came time to enroll our son for first grade, we went to the school superintendent and told him of our intentions and outlined the correspondence course we would use. He was fine with that.

The next year brought about a political change in Texas. Mark White had been elected governor of Texas and was determined to make his mark as the “Education Governor.” Schools started prosecuting homeschoolers using the charge of truancy.
