Thoughts on the Cubs Offseason
They have plenty of options.
When the Cubs snagged former Brewers’ manager Craig Counsell, they snagged one of MLB’s biggest free agents. While that’s a plus, keeping Cody Bellinger is going to be a challenge. The loss of Bellinger would offset the addition of Counsell. However, with a well-stocked farm system and plenty of cash on hand, the Cubs have plenty of options.
The Cubs are reportedly making a big push for Shohei Ohtani
While I certainly wouldn’t knock the acquisition of Ohtani, I’m not sure signing Shohei is the best move for the Cubs. Ohtani will no doubt sign the biggest contract in MLB history and I’m not sure the money spent on him might be better spent elsewhere.
While Ohtani is the greatest offensive force in baseball, I’m not sure the Cubs wouldn’t be better off addressing a position of need. Right field and DH are covered. At least they are covered if the Cubs let Christopher Morel man the DH position.
I saw a podcast where one of the talking heads advocated the Cubs signing Jorge Soler just to pound homers from the DH slot. Why do that when Morel could do the same thing at a much lower price?
As for right field, Seiya Suzuki came alive in the second half of the season and may have turned a corner.
