As a performer, I liked Dean Martin fairly well. I especially enjoyed the Dean Martin roasts. I also enjoyed some of his movies, particularly his westerns. I even liked his singing. Few performers were as versatile as Martin. So here are some things you may not have known about Dean.

1: As a boxer he had 12 fights. He jokingly said, “I won all but 11.”

He billed himself as “Kid Crochet.” Why? Was Kid Needlepoint taken?

2: Martin’s signature song was “Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime.”

That might account for Martin’s three marriages.

3: His charisma and self-assurance led him to being known as, ‘The King of Cool.”

Well, that does sound a lot better than Kid Crochet.

4: When Martin went to school, his broken English made him a target of bullies.

Dean’s parents spoke Italian and as did Dean until he was five. I can see where this might have put him on that boxing track.
