Most, if not all of the “seven stranded castaways” on Gilligan's Island” are best known for their work in that TV series. That’s true even though most of the “Stranded Seven” had a nice career beyond GI. That was certainly true of Alan Hale Jr.

Off the top of my head, I knew Alan Hale Jr. was the son of a famous actor. I believe his name was Alan Hale. I also remember him from guest spots on Gunsmoke and The Andy Griffith Show. As I remember, he played the same type of character in both shows. With that foundation, here are some things you didn’t know about Alan Hale Jr.

1: Alan appeared in more than 200 movies, most of them westerns.

He played the Sundance Kid along Neville Brand’s Butch Cassidy in The Three Outlaws. Hale and Brand have a little less star power than Redford and Newman.

2: Alan’s mother was actress Gretchen Hartman. Hartman appeared in 67 movies. Most of them were silent movies.

Alan appeared in some silent movies as a baby. That worked out well since he couldn’t talk.
