His defense is killing them.

The White Sox were thwarted in their efforts to sweep a three-game series from the Cleveland Guardians Thursday. The Guardians prevailed by a 3–1 score, but the game highlighted something I’ve been saying for a long time. Tim Anderson is not a very good defensive shortstop. But you don’t have to take my word for it. Guardians’ announcer, Tom Hamilton said the same thing.

After Anderson committed an error on an easy chopper that let the eventual winning run score, Hamilton had this to say, “ And, well, at the end of the day folks he’s not a very good shortstop defensively.” Preach, brother. Anderson’s defensive game ran the full gauntlet of what he offers defensively.

Earlier in the game, with one out and nobody on, Anderson ranged to his right, made a backhand stop, followed by a perfect jump throw, a la Derek Jeter on to first to retire the batter.

Later, with one on and nobody out, the Guardians smashed a ball to Sox first baseman, Andrew Vaughn, who made a strong throw to Anderson in an attempt to start a double play. Anderson dropped the excellent throw. He was able to pick the ball up for a force out, but there was no hope for a double play. And of course, later came the error Anderson was actually charged for.
