After a disastrous road trip that saw them lose six out of seven games to the Marlins and Nationals, Matt Mervis will join the Cubs on Friday. It’s a move Cubs fans have been clamored for since the start of the season.

Mervis has put up great numbers in Iowa, hitting .286 with an OBP of .402 while slugging .560. Meanwhile, Eric Hosmer has an OPS of .652 with a WAR of -0.2. As of late, the Cubs offense has been in the tank and desperately needs a spark.

I was okay with the Cubs signing Hosmer as a free agent, as long as it didn’t slow up the emergence of Matt Mervis with the Cubs, but that’s exactly what it did. And it has probably cost the Cubs some games.

The Cubs rode a hot start by Patrick Wisdom to a number of early season wins, but it seems that Wisdom has remembered that he’s Patrick Wisdom and his production has plummeted. Actually, Wisdom is a functional power threat but a regression to the mean was to be expected.

And while we’re at it…

Chris Morel has been named the International League Player of the Month. He has been absolutely raking so far this season. Morel has hammered 11 home runs, while hitting .358 with an OPS of 1.281. Why he is in Iowa instead of Nick Madrigal is…
