It’s sometimes more about marketing than actual writing.

I think it’s safe to safe most writers on Medium would prefer to just concentrate on writing and let the monetary side of things take care of itself. Sadly, if you want to make any money from your work, you have to pay attention to the business side of writing. In years gone by, if a writer was good, and/or fortunate, they could get a steady gig and not worry about anything else. Or, if they were really good/fortunate, they could get an agent to help with that. That seldom happens today. As I've said before:

Writing is fun. Marketing is hard work.

How I adjusted my writing strategy after being smoked by Medium

For a period of time, I was happy about the amount of money I made on Medium. I was making around $1000 a month and the needle was pointing up. Then came the dreaded change of algorithm. The result was my earnings went from $1000 a month to between $100-$200. I currently have that up to between $300-$400 per month. This month I’m on track for $500.

I’ve made some adjustments.

It seems that read time beyond 30 seconds no longer matters. Therefore, I don’t do long articles. Sometimes I’ll take a subject and break it to multiple posts…

You probably don't know my name, but have likely seen my work. I've written for numerous syndicated cartoon strips and my gags have appeared in national pubs.
