Some Hollywood types are “eccentric” but Ed Wood transcended that.

In the past I’ve done a piece about “Plan 9 from Outer Space.” The masterpiece that was to the movie industry what the Hindenburg was to air travel. Of course, that fiasco was the brainchild of director, Ed Wood. If you think the movie was odd, consider some facts about Ed Wood.

1: So, just how bad of a director was Ed Wood?

In 1980 he was awarded a Golden Turkey posthumously for the worst director of all time. Sort of like a past due lifetime achievement award in reverse.

2: One of Ed’s first jobs was a cinema usher.

And there are those who would say that was his greatest contribution to movies.

3: Wood served in the military during World War II, enlisting right after the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

He wrote and starred in a play based on his military service called “Casual Company.” That name seems appropriate when you learn there are reports Wood wore a pink bra and panties into combat during the Battle of Tarawa.

4: Ed used a number of pen names when writing.

You probably don't know my name, but have likely seen my work. I've written for numerous syndicated cartoon strips and my gags have appeared in national pubs.
