Remembering ‘Lonesome Dove”
To me, it was the greatest mini-series of all time.
Remember when TV used to throw out the occasional mini-series? Some were pretty good, some not so much. But for me, the greatest TV mini-series of all was “Lonesome Dove.” And I believe that Robrt Duvall’s portrayal of Augustus McCrae was the greatest characterization I’ve ever seen.
I was really looking forward to seeing Lonesome Dove, but when I heard Robert Duvall was going to play Gus, I was disappointed, And I could not have been more wrong. For a guy with some character flaws Gus was immensely likeable.
While Duvall may have been great, he wasn’t alone in doing an outstanding job with his role. Tommy Lee Jones, as the taciturn Woodrow Call also gave a memorable performance. I could go on, but there will be more as I go through things you might not have known about “Lonesome Dove.”
1: Woodrow Call liked people to have good manners.
You might remember when Woodrow Call catches an army scout quirting Dish and Newt, after nearly beating the scout to death, Woodrow says something like, “I can’t abide rude behavior in a man and won’t tolerate it.” You might have noticed, to back his point up, when Woodrow was pounding on the scout, he had his pinky finger extended.
