Where did all the women go?

A while back I put together a list of my favorite TV westerns from the 50s and 60s. Bonanza was on that list. The show contained action. a strong family and was a deathtrap for any eligible females who came along and displayed any interest in the Cartwrights.

Even the family patriarch, Ben Cartwright was widowed three times. Each of his three sons came from different mothers who died sometime after marrying Ben and giving birth. Strangely there was no investigation into all of these deaths. Beyond that, here are some things you might not have known about Bonanza,

1: The Cartwrights were poor candidates to star in the musical, “Hair.”

Lorne Green, Pernell Roberts and Dan Blocker all wore toupees. While Michael Landon had plenty of hair, he went gray early, so he had to color his hair.

2: Michael Landon was considered difficult to work with.

Possibly because he was the baby of his family.

3: One of the show’s screenwriters, David Dortort, was British, and it showed in some the show’s stories.
