Panhandling for Fun and Profit
Some techniques are much more profitable than others.
I lived in Oklahoma City for a number of years and I noticed there was a high number of panhandlers in the area. While there were a high number of panhandlers some were more imaginative about their vocation than others. As the cartoon above illustrates some techniques are more aggressive than others. And as the number one panhandling technique in our cartoon shows, there are even the most reprehensible panhandlers of them all, the white-collar panhandlers.
Your basic garden variety panhandlers are usually fairly direct in their technique. Often they will position themselves by a stoplight and have a sign outlining their problem. Generally, they’re jobless, on their way to somewhere and need help, or have a family and no job. But some are a little more innovative, they will employ a partner or prop.
One guy, I saw by an intersection near where I lived worked with a dog. I guess he was teaching his dog to beg. I actually felt sorry for the dog.
I don’t want to seem insensitive to people with disabilities, but I’ve seen panhandlers use legitimate disabilities and also enhance disabilities. One such…
