NFL QB Carousel Continues at a Breakneck Pace
The Browns' acquisition of DeShaun Watson rubs some fans the wrong way.
NFL franchises have been flipping QBs at a dizzying pace, but one transaction towers over the rest. The Browns’ trading for DeShaun Watson. Generally speaking, the NFL shows the ethics of a five-dollar hooker and the Watson situation is a case in point.
It’s not just the acquisition of Watson, it’s the price the Browns paid for him, as well as the structuring of his contract. The Houston Texans received a record haul for Watson, six draft choices, including three first-round picks.
Watson also gets $230 million in guaranteed money over five years. How did Watson actually gain value with 22 lawsuits stacked up against him? Right now that contract equates to better than $10 million per allegation of sexual misconduct.
I’m aware of the concept of innocent until proven guilty, but 22 accusers is a lot of accusers. The Browns said they did their due diligence on the matter, but the attorney for Watson’s accusers said he wasn’t contacted. It seems the Browns didn’t think much diligence was due.
The Browns want an adult as their QB.
