Medium, News Break, and Now Substack
Go Comics is also on my radar.
The biggest check I’ve ever gotten for writing was for $1675. That was my pay from quarter of sales for my gags for the comic strip, Dennis the Menace. A few years they that paid $400 for gags used in the Sunday comics and $75 for gags used in the dailies. For years I've supplemented my income through gag writing. Unfortunately, I’ve only been able to get so far in that niche.
Medium really isn’t a great place for cartoons since pay is based on read time. I have used some of my cartoons to draw interest to some of the pieces I’ve written for Medium. But there has to be a better way to make money from the cartoons I write, and Jerry King draws up. Thus, I'm adding Substack to my potential residue streams.
Jerry and I have literally collaborated on thousands of cartoons over the years. And in my opinion, they are really good. At this point, I’m posting them on Substack at a rate of one or two a day. Currently, the subscription is free. At some point I’ll probably start charging a small fee for it. There are a couple of cartoons up there now, but more will be added on a daily basis (mostly). Check it out and please subscribe if you like the cartoons you’ve seen on Medium. You’ll see some new stuff on Substack. Here’s the link: Know When to Say When — by Lambert Cartoons (substack.com)
