And maybe make a buck.

Have you ever noticed how upbeat those commercials for ancestry sites are.? It seems like somebody is always finding some hidden jewel in their family line. (You can make your own joke about family jewels.) While finding inspiration and self-worth or a sense of self-awareness might be motivation for some, I suggest other motives: finding a scapegoat or an excuse for not making something of one’s self. Perhaps solace can be found for lack of a productive live if you find you come from a long list of losers.

Of course, even if a person researches their ancestry in search of heroes, be prepared for some disappoints and shocks along the way. For example, what if you find some extra marriages along the way? Or what about kissing cousins becoming marrying cousins? What if a member of a, “pure” race finds out his lineage isn’t so pure? To take into account these and other unpleasant possibles, some specialized sites should be considered. Then again, maybe you hope your search will score some cash. Either way, keep these fictitious sites in mind:

GrandPaWasaRollingStone.com: This site would document, shall we say, genealogical indiscretions on the part of ancestors dating back before 1930. While older members of your family may not want to tell the whole truth about your family tree, this site leaves no stone…
