Legal Terms You Should Know
Let me take some of the mystery out of legal mumbo jumbo.
I’ve studied a lot of law. Well, actually, I watched a lot of ‘Law and Order” reruns. Based on those hundreds of hours of watching Jack McCoy I’ve picked up a lot of legal jargon. Let me share the benefit of binge watching one of the finest dramas ever to air on TV. If you don’t find my info helping, I suggest you go up the next rung of the ladder. The non-attorney spokesperson. Now, on to that terminology.
1: Admissible: This is what you can admit to without getting into too much trouble. Hang on, it seems that term refers to stuff that can actually be considered as evidence in a court case.
2: Alternate juror: A juror with an alternative lifestyle. Wait, being told it has nothing to do with a juror’s lifestyle, it just refers to a possible replacement juror.
3: Appellate: The form in which some pet food comes. Whoops, it seems like it actually refers to a court that can review the ruling of a lower court. Much like a kid who asks mom for something after dad has said no.
4: Accessory. The bling you might wear while committing a crime. Hold on, being told that accessory is actually someone associated with a crime that wasn’t actually there at the commission of the crime. Sort of like a worker having someone else punch their time clock…
