Larry Lambert’s 10 Favorite Chicago Cubs
Some are old and some are new.
I’ve been a Chicago sports fan for 60 years. Included in that time frame are watching the Cubs be mostly inept. Still, there have been flashes of good times, and dare I say, great players.
Keep in mind, may favorite players aren’t necessarily the greatest Cubs players, but all were great. Before getting into the actual list, nod of recognition to some players who didn’t make the list. Included are Sammy Sosa, Andre Dawson, Ernie Banks, Rick Reuschel and Jake Arrieta. Now, on to the countdown.
10: Bill Madlock: This guy is the sleeper on the list. He was in Chicago for three seasons. He came to the Cubs in a trade with the Texas Rangers for Fergie Jenkins. In his time with the Cubs, he hit .313-.354-.339, winning two batting titles in last two seasons in Chicago. After that, he was traded to the San Francisco Giants for Bobby Murcer it what was thought at the time as a contact driven decision. It was a bad trade, and the Cubs lost one of the best pure hitters the team has seen in the last 60 years.
9: Anthony Rizzo: After some disastrous seasons, Anthony Rizzo’s arrival signaled some light at the end of the tunnel during the Cubs rebuild. In 10 seasons with the Cubs, Rizzo hit 242 home runs with 784 RBIs. He was a three-time all-star, and most importantly was a…
