Facts About Zane Grey
I actually preferred Louis L’Amour for my westerns, but that’s another story.
In the past I’ve written about how much I enjoyed the work of Louis L’Amour. I did most of my reading of L’Amour’s work back in the 1970s. At that time some of my fellow readers also read Zane Grey. I’ve read some of Grey’s work but didn’t enjoy it nearly as much as I did L’Amour's. I found Grey’s writing to be a bit stilted and his dialogue hard to follow.
Of course, it seemed that Grey’s strength was describing sunsets and various locations. Personally, I preferred L’Amour’s dialogue and action sequences. But to each his own. There is no denying Grey was one of the best western writers in American literature. I didn’t know a lot about Zane Grey, so I did a little research. Here are some things you might not have known about Zane Grey.
1: In addition to be a famous writer, Grey was also a dentist.
Ironically, critics of his work said reading his stuff was like pulling teeth. Well, not really, but it was an easy joke.
2: Grey went to the University of Pennsylvania on a full baseball scholarship.
Which reminds of another ballplayer who was also a dentist, Casey Stengel. I believe Grey was the better writer…
