For some of us, the mention of the name, Walter Brennan, evokes the image of Amos McCoy. The head of the McCoy clan, aka, “The Real McCoys.” But Brennan was one of the most enduring of western sidekicks. He was one of the things that made those John Wayne classics, “Red River” and “Rio Bravo” so popular.

While those images conjure up sort of a warm fuzzy image of Brennan, other people are less enthusiastic about Brennan’s image. That’s in large part because of his conservative political leanings. So, here are some things you might not have known about Walter Brennan.

1: Brennan worked with the giants of Hollywood, including The Big Three of Cinema.

That’s right, he worked with Moe, Larry and Curly in the classic, “Restless Knights.” In that memorable piece of cinema, Brennan, while on his deathbed, tells the stooges they are royalty. Now that’s a royal family I might be interested in.

2: Walter was also in the Bob Hope movie, “The Princess and the Pirate.”

He was a pirate, but not The pirate. And I don’t belive he had a limp or a wooden leg. Actually, as I remember, that was a pretty good movie and Brennan was one…
