I generally write about entertainment, getting older, or sports. But this time I will delve into some culture. Specifically, I’ll take dive into the 1930 Grant Wood classic, American Gothic. A look at the painting evokes questions. I’ll take a look at those questions, give my own answers, and give you some background regarding the classic.

To ensure this piece is culturally enriching and artsy, I will refrain from using the term artsy-fartsy. Okay, just that one time. I’m only human. So, here are some things you might not have known about American Gothic.

1: The painting conjures up many questions, such as, “Who are those guys?”

The artist, Grant Wood indicated it represented the farmer and his unmarried daughter who lived in the farmhouse. Regardless of who they are, they could have really used cable TV.

2: The models for the picture were Wood’s sister and dentist.

I’m not sure what agency they were with.

3: Some people who saw the painting thought the man and woman were husband and wife.

You probably don't know my name, but have likely seen my work. I've written for numerous syndicated cartoon strips and my gags have appeared in national pubs.
