Robert Mitchum had the capacity to play either a hero or a villain. On occasion, when he played the hero, he also had some baggage to deal with. When he played a villain, he could be truly menacing.

Critics might say he generally played the same character, with slight variations. Those variations determined if he was a hero or a villain.

In addition to a great screen presence, Mitchum also had a great voice. His narration for the western, “Tombstone,” was particularly effect. Now, on to some facts about Robert Mitchum.

1: Mitchum left home and early age, but some details are sketchy.

On occasion Mitchum said he ran away from home. Another report said his mother packed his suitcase and gave him a sandwich. So, he didn’t start off from scratch, he had a sandwich.

While that might seem really cold, Mitchum did have wanderlust and his mother would send food and clothes care of the post office of where she thought he was.

2: As a teenager, Mitchum tried the hobo life, hopping trains, etc.

It didn’t prove to be a lucrative career choice as he was soon arrested for vagrancy.
