Most of probably remember George Burns as an old guy who played God and popped up in movies and on TV a lot. Of course, before most of us were alive, he worked with his wife Gracie.

In some ways, George Burns was like a male counterpart of Betty White. A wise-cracking old person. Burns is perhaps best known for playing God. No, not like in a doctor or politician way, but actually portraying God in movies. Personally, I find the idea of an old man smoking a cigar being God disconcerting. Beyond that, here are some facts about George Burns.

1: George started his entertainment career as a kid singing in what they called, the Pee-Wee Quartet. George said of the experience, “We started out singing on ferryboats, in saloons, in brothels, and on street corners.”

Getting paid could be a challenge, as can be noted from this statement from George, “We’d put our hats down for donations. Sometimes the customers threw something in the hats. Sometimes they took something out of the hats. Sometimes they took the hats.” Sort of like communal hats.
