She was an amazing talent.

Cass Elliott had one of the most beautiful singing voices I’ve ever heard. Other favorites of mine are Olivia Newton John, Karen Carpenter and Carly Simon. That’s pretty exclusive company.

Sadly, along with her great talent came a pretty tempestuous life. Life with the group, The Mamas and the Papas was a real roller coaster ride. Obviously, Cass wrestled with a weight problem. In addition, after her death there was a rumor, she died by choking on a ham sandwich. So, at this point, here are some things you probably didn’t know about Cass Elliott.

1: Cass was born Ellen Naomi Cohen.

Mama Ellen Cohen doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue, does it.

2: Speaking off the nickname “Mama,” Cass reportedly didn’t care for it.

Imagine that, a young woman in her 20s not liking being called “Mama.”

3: Cass said her voice ranged improved by three notes after being hit in the head by some copper tubing at a construction site.

So why bother with voice lessons? Aspiring singers should just walk through a construction site and hope they get hit in the head.
