11 Facts About Bob Uecker
He’s an amazingly funny guy.
I’ve heard of a number of athletes who were supposed to be funny. Most of them are not. However, Bob Uecker is the exception. He is genuinely funny. His appearances on the Tonight Show are legendary. While he was okay in Mr. Belvidere, in other settings where Bob is being himself, he’s tremendously entertaining.
Bob got a lot of mileage out of a less than stellar playing career, but as a broadcaster and entertainer, he’s definitely hall of fame. On to some facts about Bob Uecker.
1: Johnny Carson dubbed Bob as “Mr. Baseball.”
Just another example of Johnny being the King of Comedy.
2: Bob finished his big-league career with a batting average of .200.
In baseball, .200 is known as the Medoza Line, after Mario Mendoza. That should be changed to the Uecker Line in honor of Bob’s big league playing career.
3: In 1967, Uech led the NL in passed balls despite playing in only 59 games.
Part of the reason for that was Bob caught knuckleballer, Phil Niekro. Of course, generally speaking Phil only pitched every fourth game, so we shouldn’t diminish Bob’s accomplishments.
