Why is getting a business to call you back so excruciating?

In trying to conduct some banking business this week, I encountered one of my pet peeves, the unreturned phone call. I suspect this is an irritant for many consumers. It seems like business, in general, is trying to eliminate as much personal contact as possible. That came into sharp focus again for me this week.

I received an email from my bank asking for some documents. Since I had already given the documents to the bank, I had questions. I called the person handling my application and she texted me that she would call when she had a chance. Apparently, she was taken hostage by terrorists and wasn’t able to return my call.

After calling her and leaving messages for two days, I was afraid her captors had done her in so I called her boss. He said he would take care of the matter himself and for me to call him on Friday. He also told me she had given me misinformation on the completion date of our business.

My banker told me I was given misinformation because the person handling my application was a “people pleaser”. It was nice to hear she hadn’t been taken captive by terrorists, but I told my banker if she was a…
