Career Tips from a Mediocre Salesperson
Follow these tips and you too can live hand to mouth.
I’ve made a living through sales for a number of years. Admittedly the quality of that living has varied from time to time. There are some things that worked for me in sales and some things that didn’t. I was the same guy in various sales settings, but not all sales settings are the same. I’ll start with stuff that made me want to puke.
Generally speaking, when a company says, “Do exactly what we tell you and you’ll make a ton of money”, run. That’s what they’re saying. After a few years of sales what I was hearing was, “Submit to our ritualistic castration and all will be well. And even if it’s not, you can have a career in the music industry.”
Some industries/businesses I’ve worked for were fairly straight forward. Others not so much. Often during orientation companies that are less upfront, will talk about their honesty. Until you actually start pitching potential customers.
The worst sales jobs I had were trying to sell cars and energy sales. As for car sales, I know little about cars and received no training. The guys I worked with were less than scrupulous. One salesman was…
