Aaron Burr Would Have Fit into Today’s Politics
And yes, he did kill a political opponent.
To say the present political environment is volatile is an understatement. And it’s also fair to say some politicians are particularly polarizing. However, this is not the first time in history a politician has been polarizing. Let me introduce you to Aaron Burr.
Burr was not only controversial but also actually killed a political opponent. If you are like me, you remember Burr killed Alexander Hamilton in a duel. Beyond that, I didn’t know much about him. So, after some research, here are some things you probably didn’t know about Aaron Burr.
1: In addition to killing Alexander Hamilton, Burr was tried and acquitted of treason.
The treason charges stemmed from the claim he was trying to separate a part of the southwestern United States as an empire for himself. Hmm, treason and murder. That’s quite a resume of chargers.
2: His grandfather on his mother’s side was Jonathan Edwards.
That name might not mean much to you, but in his day, he was noted as a famous “fire and brimstone preacher.” In his day, people went to hear him preach in the winter just to stay warm. Ok, I just made that up.
