The principle is good for all political races.

Cartoon by Lambert-King

I have to say up front, I’ve changed the names and location for this story, but it does come from a small Oklahoma town. For purposes of this story, our “hero” will be called Red Jones from Podunk, Oklahoma.

Red ran for pretty much every political office in Podunk, from dog catcher to mayor. And always lost. Undeterred, Red was running for political office yet again. We will say he was running for city councilman. Despite his track record Red was optimistic.

Enter Gilbert O’Sullivan

Oldsters among us might remember a monster musical hit from Gilbert O’Sullivan called “Alone Again, Naturally.”

Notably are some of the lyrics from that song:

But as if to knock me down
Reality came around

And sure enough, reality came around to knock Red down.

Red had lost yet again.

Comfort from family

His wife was supportive after a loss, telling Red, “ I thought for sure you would win this time. Lots of people hugged me and said they were voting for you.”
