Most of us have read about the Roman Empire during history class. We probably have some of those facts melded with misconceptions from movies. So, we have some information about Julius Caesar, gladiators, and Cleopatra all rolled into one mass of misconceptions. So, let’s take a look at some things about the Roman Empire you might not have known.

1: “Get your hot dogs, peanuts and gladiator sweat right here!”

Gladiator sweat was sold at the Coliseum. It was used as an aphrodisiac and for other medicinal purposes.

2: Incitatus for proconsul.

One rumor has it that that wild and crazy guy, Caligula, wanted Incitatus to be his proconsul. “So what?’ you ask. Well, Incitatus was Caligula’s horse. I guess he was a running mate in a literal sense. Maybe even a political dark horse.

Hold on, being told Incitatus was a white horse. Was it a case of Emperor bias?

This report/rumor came to light a decade after Caligula’s death, so take it with a grain of salt. Or sugar.

3: Romans had public bathrooms.
