How did it get to be known as the ‘Show Me State?

For years my family made the drive though Missouri as we made the trek between Illinois and Oklahoma. So, while I’ve been through Missouri quite a few times, I haven’t done much sightseeing. I did make a trip to Branson once, and that was nice.

Beyond my personal experience, when I think of Missouri, I think of the St. Louis Cardinals and Jesse James. Though not in the same way. So, after some more reading, here are 15 facts about Missouri.

1: The Missouri state flag features two grizzly bears even though the species has never lived in the state.

After all, two unicorns would have made no sense.

2: Kansas City is the barbeque capital of the world.

I’m surprised the population of the city isn’t larger. Numerically and literally.

3: St. Joseph, Missouri was the starting point for the short-lived pony express.

While that method may seem slow, keep in mind that now mail service is known as snail mail.

4: The expression, the “Show Me State” is of uncertain origin.
