Like most of the 50 United States, I haven’t had much to do with the state of Louisiana. I did spend some time in Shreveport when my father was in the VA hospital there, but really couldn’t get a feel for the city based on that limited experience.

I also drove across the state years ago on my way to Florida, and it was not pleasant experience. I found it hard to find a place to stop and get a bite to eat. It also struck me as a really impoverished area. But once again, that wasn’t a lot to go on. Against that limited, and somewhat negative backdrop, here are some things you probably didn’t know about Louisiana.

1: Louisiana is the only state that subdivides its territory into parishes.

The original idea was to use “demises” as the term, but it was decided that sounded silly. Okay, it was out of regard for Louisiana’s French heritage.

2: Louisiana has never had an official language.

Which you could have probably guessed if you have ever watched The Waterboy.

3: The state also ranks as the least healthy state along with having the highest homicide rate.

You probably don't know my name, but have likely seen my work. I've written for numerous syndicated cartoon strips and my gags have appeared in national pubs.
