Perhaps the first thing people think of when they think of Kentucky is the Kentucky Derby. In addition to the Kentucky Derby the residents of Kentucky are noted for their fervor about college basketball.

Beyond that, I also think about tobacco when I think of Kentucky. I also know it’s a red state with a democratic governor. That’s not a whole lot of knowledge going into to this piece. But after some more reading, here are some things you didn’t know about Kentucky.

1: Kentucky is known as “The Bluegrass State” because of the species of grass that fuels the state’s thoroughbred horse industry.

Bluegrass isn’t blue, but if allowed to grow to its natural height of two to three feet it will sprout blue flowers. And if you allow it to grow that tall, your neighbors will call the city on you.

2: While Kentucky is known as a hub of the tobacco industry the economy has diversified. It is fourth among states in the number of automobiles and trucks assembled.

I’m not sure if ashtrays are mandatory for automobiles assembled in the state.
