15 Facts About Kansas
There’s lots of flatland and sunflowers.
Some years ago I drove across Kanas. Not to be derogatory, but the ride wasn’t that eventful. Not that that in itself is a bad thing. The drive was monotonous, but the sunflowers were nice.
I know that Matt Dillion was stationed in Dodge City, but on terms of actual facts, I don’t believe that counts. Kansas is home to some real western history, however. And they do take their college basketball. Beyond that, I don’t know that much about Kansas. So, after some more reading, here are some things you didn’t know about Kansas.
1: Kansas adopted a resolution making it a dry state in 1881. That resolution was repealed in 1941.
For a while, pre-statehood, when Kansas was known as Bleeding Kansas. It appears that was also a time when it was known as Dry Kansas. Obviously, there were loopholes in the law and cowboys were able to get a drink in a local saloon.
2: Carrie Nation vandalized her first saloon in Kiowa, Kansas in 1900.
Nation was famous for busting up saloons. She was arrested numerous times. Her background is what you might expect. Her first husband was an alcoholic, her second husband was a preacher, and her mother suffered…
