Admittedly, the fact that Abrahm Lincoln spent time in Illinois is a bit more significant than the fact for the most part, I grew up in Illinois. Mostly in Chicago suburbs. That accounts for my debilitating fondness of Chicago sports teams.

Chicago truly is a great place to visit. It’s one of the great food places in the world and has a ton of diverse sites for tourists to visit. The state is also noted for its corrupt politics, but you’re likely not thinking about that when you’re eating an Italian beef sandwich. Beyond that, here are some things you didn’t know about Illinois.

1: Illinois became a state in 1818 with the capital being located in Kaskaskia. A small, rented building served as the capital building.

The census of 2000 showed Kaskaskia had a population of nine. The glory days are long gone.

2: Illinois had a complicated relationship with slavery. Though theoretically a free state, in actual practice it was not a hospitable state for slaves or even freedmen.
