There’s more to the place than oranges, old people and theme parks.

I lived in Florida for nine years and enjoyed it. Before coming down here I knew just a few things about it. It had a Disney theme park, the Golden Girls lived there, and Crockett and Tubbs had their hands full fighting crime in Miami.

I also knew it was the “Sunshine State,” and it had lots of beaches. Those last two things are what attracted me to Florida. Since I’ve lived here a while and need something to write about, I decided to check out some facts about Florida. And here they are:

1: Crocodiles and alligators live together in Florida.

Florida is the only place in the world where that is the case. It’s like a reptilian version of, “Ebony and Ivory.”

2: There is a reason why there is an NHL team in Florida called the Panthers.

Panthers are the original state animal of Florida. Panthers are indigenous to Florida and can be dangerous. Perhaps even more dangerous than panthers are cougars. These females often migrate from cooler climates for warmth, and perhaps male companionship. While panthers are generally found in the wild, cougars can show up anywhere.
