15 Facts About Arkansas
It hails itself as “The Land of Opportunity.”
I lived in Arkansas twice in my life. When my wife and I were newly married, we moved to Fort Smith Arkansas for about a year. And it wasn’t a bad place to live. About 30 years later, we moved to Searcy, Arkansas when I was working as a landman. We were only there a few months, but once again it wasn’t a bad experiance.
Beyond my personal experience, I didn’t have a great deal of knowledge of Arkansas. I did know a little bit about Judge Issac Parker, the so called “Hanging Judge” based in Fort Smith. I also knew that Clintons hailed from Arkansas. So, armed with that little bit of knowledge, here are some things you probably didn’t know about Arkansas.
1: Arkansas became the 25th state on June 15, 1836. The state’s economy revolved around the production of cotton which relied heavily on slave labor.
Arkansas seceded from the Union and joined Confederate States of America. Arkansas returned to The Union in 1868. The state continued to suffer economically due to lack of economic diversity. Years later Sam Walton helped with that.
