For a period of time it seemed like everywhere you looked, Oprah Winfrey was there. She became enormously wealthy and influential. And I know surprisingly little about her. Going way back, I remember her in The Color Purple. And of course, her talk show was hugely popular.

In addition, her battle with weight issues has been well documented. And I believe she has or had a boyfriend named Stedman, or Steadfast or something like that. I clean that up with some research. Now, on to some facts about Oprah Winfrey.

1: Oprah was born into poverty in Mississippi, but despite dismal circumstances, she landed a radio job while in high school. By the time she was 19, she was a co-anchor for the evening news.

She moved on to co-host the news at WJZ TV in Baltimore, and it didn’t go well. She said, “They told me I was the wrong color, the wrong size, and that I showed too much emotion.” So, why did they hire her in the first place?

2: Oprah has been criticized for creating a confession culture.
