12 Facts About Shirley Jones
She is more than Shirley Partridge.
During the 70s a couple of TV moms were very popular, Shirley Patridge and Carol Brady. Like the Ginger Mary Ann debate, both Shirley and Carol had their advocates. That debate aside, I watched The Partridge Family more than The Brady Bunch. Of course, Shirley Partridge is just a fraction of Shirley Jones’ career.
Though I haven’t seen in, I understand she was great in the musical Oklahoma. Later in her career she played Drew Carey’s girlfriend in The Drew Carey Show. And of course she had some famous family members. With no further ado, here are some things you didn’t know about Shirley Jones.
1: Though she often played wholesome characters, she won an Acadamy Award for her portrayal of Lulu Baines in Elmer Gantry.
The Lulu character has been described as a vengeful prostitute. You know the saying, “A vengeful prostitute is a motivated prostitute.”
2: Shirley is the only performer to have ever signed a personal contract with songwriters, Rogers and Hammerstein.
She was first cast in a minor role in South Pacific. Things got better for her.
