There was a time, no so long ago, when Mel Gibson was a Hollywood golden boy. It’s amazing how much a drunken rant can damage a person’s career and reputation. Of course, that wasn’t the only false step Mel made. It seems that Mel and his girlfriend could also have used some couples counseling. I can’t remember which girlfriend it was that had a crude audio recording of him, but it put a serious dent in his career.

In his heyday, Mel was a top box-office star and had the reputation as a generally nice guy. At least to the public. Also, it seems like smoking has really taken a toll on Mel’s appearance. So, here are some things that you probably didn’t know about Mel Gibson.

1: Mel was named People Magazine’s first Sexiest Man Alive in 1985.

Mark Harmon won the title in 1986. The good news is that Mel was still alive, he just wasn’t the sexiest in the land anymore.

2: Mel’s paternal grandfather, John Hutton Gibson, was a millionaire by virtue of the tobacco business in the Southern United States.
