When I was in my late teens, I went through a period of time where I read a number of books about the Old West as well as western novels. Among the guys I read about was Bat Masterson. He wasn’t the shoot em up guy some of the characters of the Old West were, but he definitely led an eventful life.

I’m also familiar with the old TV series about Bat Masterson with Gene Barry starring as Bat. I don’t remember being too blown away by it, though it may be better than the series about Wyatt Earp which starred Hugh O’Brien. Regardless, on to some facts about Bat Masterson.

1: Bat was actually born in Canada. In Henryville, Quebec, Canada East to be more specific.

Right. And Billy the Kid was born in New York City. What’s that? Billy really was born in NYC?

2: On June 27, 1874, Bat was involved in one of the most famous Indian fights in the history of the Old West, the Second Battle of Adobe Walls.

In that battle, 28 buffalo hunters, including Bat, held of a band of hundreds of Comanche, Kiowa and Cheyenne warriors. Only four buffalo hunters were killed…
